Truthfully, there's no single "perfect" month for a Kenyan getaway — it comes down to what you're hoping to experience.

That said, if you're combining a safari with time on the coast, we generally point travelers toward December through February. Rain is scarce, the air is dry and breezy, and the temperatures sit in a comfortable range.

Which months should you skip?

Kenya welcomes visitors year-round, but March through May brings the long rains, and heavy downpours are common during this stretch. We tend to steer clients away from this window for a couple of reasons:

  • On safari: tracks turn muddy and occasionally impassable, and wildlife becomes harder to locate as they disperse away from water sources.
  • On the coast: the ocean loses the crystal clarity it boasts during drier months, affecting diving and snorkeling.

Kenya's four seasons

Timing your trip well starts with understanding Kenya's rhythm of dry and wet spells throughout the year:

First Dry Season January to March

The warmest stretch of the year, with intense heat and very little moisture. Vegetation thins out and wildlife gathers close to remaining waterholes.

Long Rains March to May

Southeasterly winds bring Kenya's wettest weeks. The landscape responds quickly, turning lush and vividly green.

Second Dry Season June to September

Cooler and gentler on the thermometer, though still noticeably damper than the January–March stretch. Perfect for long days out.

Short Rains October to December

Northeasterly winds trigger brief showers — quick to pass and rarely intense. A beautiful time for photography.

Three climates, one country

Kenya's diverse geography produces three distinct weather patterns:

🌊
The Coast A warm, humid, equatorial climate with mild swings in temperature and dependable heat.
🏔️
Parks and Highlands A gentler, temperate climate — the higher the elevation, the cooler and rainier it gets.
🐪
The North Arid and consistently hot, with rainfall a rare event. Best explored with proper preparation.

Average temperatures

Temperatures shift depending on where in Kenya you are. Broadly speaking, January through March runs hottest, while July and August offer the coolest relief.

Best time for a safari

Outside of the rainy season, nearly any month works for a safari — the right one for you depends on what you want to witness:

July to September

Fresh off the rains, the landscape is at its greenest and most vibrant. This is prime time for the Great Migration, when huge herds of wildebeest and zebra cross between Tanzania and Kenya, reaching the Masai Mara around July and August.

October to February

The savanna dries out and thins, drawing animals toward waterholes and making sightings far easier. It's also prime season for birdwatching, as October brings thousands of migratory species down from Europe.

Best time for the coast

Kenya isn't only about safaris — its coastline is lined with soft, white-sand beaches. The sweet spots for a coastal escape are:

☀️ June to September

Occurs just after the long rains, offering comfortable, mild conditions perfect for lounging and water sports.

🌴 December to February

The standout choice — crystal clear ocean waters, perfectly dry skies, and beautiful warm air.
